Words that Work: How to Craft Messages that Deliver Capital, Earn Headlines and Build Buzz
Digital entrepreneurs often struggle to clearly and effectively communicate their concepts. Whether it's a VC pitch, an interview with a reporter or simply writing a decent tweet, many start-ups suffer from confusing and contradictory messaging.

Jon offers 5 powerful rules for discovering the words that work and shares a simple day-to-day plan for putting them to use. Citing examples from emerging start-ups in travel, gaming, retail and more, Jon explains how every start-up should:

1. Start with purpose
2. Remember that people are interesting (and everything else is not)
3. Tell a story with a beginning, middle, and end
4. Listen to your conversation partner
5. Reduce, re-use and recycle

Jon also explains how to put these principles in action by walking through a day in the life of a busy start-up CEO.

The presentation:

- Identifies common causes of bad messaging
- Defines benchmarks for success
- Delivers concrete, actionable advice that any participant can put into effect immediately

Finding a 'blue ocean' that will take you from start-up to success
The book “Blue Ocean Strategy” outlines the benefits of building a business in uncontested market space: creating new customers, not fighting over ones that already exist. In this session, we will use business examples to explore finding your own blue ocean -- as a business, a product, or an idea to communicate. How does it meet a need, solve a problem, or inspire action? And once you get started, how do you build and sustain engagement with the right audiences? We’ll discuss using different strategies such as consumer engagement to support a B2B business model.

How slow websites steal $500B/year from retailers

Most web professionals are well-versed in the first lesson in web performance: nobody likes a slow website; faster is always better. However, few realize what a large impact website performance has on the bottom line.

This session will show, using data, how retailers are losing out on over $.5 Trillion /year in revenues because our attention spans are shorter than our page load times.

Why how you define failure matters
Too often in startup culture, founders attempt to mimic the success of other companies.

The problem is, no matter how detailed the road map, your success is specific to you, your team, and the resources you had available at the time of launch.  What I can do though, is learn from your mistakes, because mistakes are unfortunately repeatable (over and over again by different people in the exact same ways).

So rather than shun discussing how we have 'failed,' why not change how we view failure so that it is something that empowers the startup community in Atlanta.
